A man from central China has been made a tribal chief in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) has reported.

Kong Tao, 34, was granted the title by the Emir of Jiwa district for his contribution to infrastructure development in Nigeria.

Mr Kong, who is from China’s Henan Province, first came to Nigeria nine years ago as an assistant engineer responsible for a railway project. He is now the general manager of the operation division of the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation in Nigeria.

According to the SCMP, “over the years, Kong and his team had built two major railways in Abuja, repaired two public roads, built three buildings for a school and a soccer field for a village.”

Last month, I wrote about how Mr Mike Zhang, a Chinese national, was awarded a chieftaincy title in Kano, one of Nigeria’s largest commercial cities.

These recognitions of Chinese nationals in Nigeria can be interpreted as proof of China’s positive contributions to Nigeria’s economic growth and development.

Last December, Li Manhu, an employee of the Nigerian branch of CGCOC Group, a Chinese state-owned overseas construction company, also received a traditional recognition from the Emir of Etung in Cross River, a state in Southern Nigeria.
